Stitches
by David Small
Lowdown: Liked it. The art is perfect and the story poignant. If you like stories of people overcoming horrible parents, check it out.
Stitches is the memoir of author and illustrator David Small. He had a really crappy childhood: a passive-aggressive mother who wanted nothing to do with him, an uninvolved father, and a major illness.
The artwork perfect matches the events of Small’s youth. Most everything looks menacing, especially his parents. There is slight feel of horror and foreboding in each of the panels, which helps the reader feel a little of the young Small’s experiences.
The book is getting almost five stars on Amazon, and glowing reviews elsewhere. It was on the New York Times Graphic Book Bestseller for five weeks, so a lot of people liked it more than I did. You can learn more and preview the book at its web site.
