The Arrival
by Shaun Tan
Lowdown: Loved it. A wordless story of a man seeking to make a new life for his family, The Arrival is equal parts fantasy and human interest drama. Excellent in every way. Not what I expected.
Leaving his family behind, a man arrives in a foreign, strange country, and attempts to get a foothold so he can send for his family. Although comics are mostly a visual medium, it isn’t very often you find one that is told purely with art. There aren’t any word balloons, narration, or thought balloons. Every emotion, every story element, is told through pictures.
It seems like it must have taken Tan ages to get this right. When you have to draw the thoughts and emotions and motivations of your characters, you have to get each panel perfect, which Tan does. This book is a beautiful work of art.
